Some entrepreneurs start businesses for profit and public recognition, but Michael Verticchio runs Off the Bench Sports Excellence for the love of the game.
The company was originally founded in 1975 by the Lawrence family, but in 2018, they handed the keys over to Michael, a skate sharpening specialist and keen member of the sporting community. Since then, Michael has kept the store’s spirit alive as he and his family continue to serve its customers with joy and diligence. Their tenacity and dedication are what make them a part of the 200 strong team.
Located in Caledonia, Ontario, Off the Bench Sports Excellence is a local business that puts its customers’ needs first. They offer a wide variety of equipment, including products for hockey, baseball, ringette, soccer, figure skating, softball, and more! At the heart of Off the Bench Sports Excellence lies their expertise in skate sharpening. In fact, OHL players frequently visit the store throughout the year to keep their skates razor sharp. In addition to skate sharpening, they offer services ranging from equipment repair to custom team apparel and corporate wear.
The Off the Bench Sports Excellence commitment to service isn’t limited to just sports; they also lend their expertise and materials to creating apparel and uniforms for companies such as McDonald’s restaurants (11 locations) and schools in the area. They are even creating custom graduation apparel for a school hosting a quarantine graduation. Recently, Off the Bench Sports Excellence began partnering with Hamilton Health Sciences to provide uniforms for all of the hospitals in Hamilton and surrounding areas.
Many of you in the Caledonia area may be familiar with Off the Bench Sports Excellence’s various events dedicated to improving the wellbeing of community members and, in particular, children. They regularly participate in the beloved Caledonia Chili Cook-Off, a cause that raises money to assist local families who have children that require medical treatment. Additionally, Off the Bench Sports Excellence hosts an annual Easter egg hunt featuring Paw Patrol characters who take pictures with the children and help them find eggs. Last year, the event drew in 1,000 attendees!
Off the Bench Sports Excellence truly cares for their community, which is why they are forever working hard to accommodate their customer’s needs. The team has transitioned to curb-side pick-up to maintain a safe environment while continuing to provide the joy of sporting goods.
