The History of Volleyball
Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a YMCA physical education director in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Originally called Mintonette, the sport was designed as an indoor activity for older members of the YMCA. It combined elements from tennis and handball, creating a unique and engaging game. The sport quickly gained popularity and spread to other countries, first reaching Canada, then Cuba and Japan in the early 20th century.
The first rulebooks for volleyball were published in the early 1900s, and the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) was established in 1947. The first men's world championships took place in 1949, followed by the women's competition in 1952. Volleyball made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 1964 Games, and it has been a staple of the Summer Olympics ever since.
Rules of Volleyball
Before embarking on a full Olympic watch of this year's Paris 2024 Volleyball championship, it's best to fully understand the rules of the game. Volleyball is typically played on an indoor court measuring 18 meters long and 9 meters wide, divided by a net. Two teams of six players each compete to score points by grounding the ball on the opponent's side of the court or forcing the opponents into an error. Matches are played in a best-of-five sets format, with the first team to reach 25 points by a two-point margin winning a set. If a fifth set is necessary, it is played to 15 points with the same two-point margin required for victory.
The game involves a variety of skills, including serving, passing, setting, attacking, blocking, and digging. Players must possess strength, agility, and quick reflexes to perform at a high level, as the ball can reach speeds of up to 130 km/h.
