Sometimes, the best support you can receive comes from your community. Charles (Chuckie) Keating certainly found this to be the case as, when he was 22 years old, he was looking for ways to learn a new craft. Aided by the knowledge of his friend and mentor, Chuckie eventually found his calling in skate sharpening and repair and was able to hone in on a trade that few were pursuing at the time. Although he initially pursued this new skill after being laid off from his construction job for the winter, what started out as misfortune turned out to be a blessing in disguise. After years of loving sports and hockey, in particular, had Chuckie finally found his ideal career? Chuckie’s workmanship has served him well over the years, and his entrepreneurial curiosity makes him an essential member of the 200 Strong team.
In 1994, armed with this knowledge and skill, Chuckie invested a modest sum into opening his own simple sporting goods repair shop and skate sharpening service in Charlottetown, PE. Chuckie later bought a tack shop in 2000. At the time, he had no way of knowing that one day his small skate shop would become the beloved Chuckie’s Sports Excellence we know today In 2018, Steve Ramsay joined as a co-owner, bringing a new perspective and set of knowledge to the team. Today, the store has expanded to include a variety of sporting goods catering to hockey, ringette, soft/baseball, and lacrosse. The team has happily contributed to its community for years, and in 1996, they even served the Hanson brothers. What a blast of nostalgia!
While Chuckie’s Sports Excellence undoubtedly has excellent products and services, it’s also known for its personal touch and the quality of its staff. Chuckie himself is a one of a kind man, with a colourful personality and enthusiastic nature, his positive energy is shared amongst his team. Chuckie has always been a rink rat and holds a special place in his heart for fastball. Throughout the years, he has attended various national softball championships as an equipment manager. He understands the joy that comes from being a part of the game, which is why Chuckie’s Sports Excellence, holds annual promotions in the spring and fall to help families pay for sports registration.
